As an Alaskan-based photographer, some of my favorite sessions are the ones that take place in meaningful locations — places where families have already built memories together. Recently, I met up with a family of four in Eagle River at a trail that’s sentimental to them, and it reminded me why photographing families in their favorite spots is such a joy. Even though the day was colder (and muddier!) than any of us expected, the kids showed up ready to explore, laugh, and play — and honestly, that’s the magic of family photos in Alaska. The weather may be unpredictable, but the moments are always real.
Tiny Humans, Big Personalities
These kids brought the best kind of energy to our session. The little boy was thrilled to show off the rocks that he had discovered. Each one was special, and he showed us his super arm by throwing them into the water with maximum enthusiasm. These unscripted moments are exactly what I love documenting photographing just about anything — the joy, the curiosity, and the personality that shines through when subjects (but more specifically these kids) are simply just being themselves. His older sister was equally charming, proudly showing off her big girl decision by presenting me the shoes she picked out all by herself.
Making the Most of Alaska’s Ever-Changing Weather
If you’ve lived here long enough, you know that Alaska loves to keep photographers and their residents on their toes. The trail was muddier than we planned, and the low clouds decided to hide the mountain peaks we hoped to include. But one thing I’ve learned as a photographer in Alaska: embrace the day you’re given. And honestly? The moody clouds and wet ground didn’t take away from the session at all — I would even be as bold to say that they added to it. Real moments, real weather, real memories. In the end, we created beautiful images full of connection, color, laughter, and the kind of genuine joy you can’t fake.
